Reflection
I anticipate November 8 with mixed feelings. I am incredibly excited because that is the first time Ben will have the opportunity to vote in an election. We are planning to head to the polls together before the day begins.
I am worried. As we watch the rhetoric in the TV ads, the internet ads, in the mailings and amongst neighbors, I worry about the fissures that continue to grow. I worry about people’s rights being chipped away or completely undermined. I worry about the disappearance of any semblance of a nation trying to be just.
When I get to this point, I try to take a step back and put our moment into context. I consider what has happened in the history of Wisconsin, the United States and the world. Who experienced moments like this before? How did they experience it? What did they do?
In trying to think about our time together on Wednesday, November 9, I wonder what type of conversation we should have? So I offer this to you as the reading for the evening. Please take a moment to read from the Old Testament: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
I look forward to seeing you as we discuss our current moment and how this passage from Ecclesiastes relates.
